FCC Update

LRR’s Volunteers, Supporters, and Friends:

Earlier this week, the FCC dismissed our application for a low-power FM license. The FCC granted the available 106.5 frequency to two organizations: the local chapter of Knights of Columbus and the Corporation for Educational Advancement. We offer our congratulations and wish them success.

This means Little Raleigh Radio, at least for the time being, will not be broadcasting over traditional radio airwaves in and around downtown Raleigh. While we are deeply disappointed by the FCC’s decision, we understood this was a possibility from the outset and planned for this contingency. This is definitely not the end for Little Raleigh Radio.

Our mission and operations are not changing because we are unable broadcast over the FM airwaves. We are committed to community radio — radio that is created by our friends and neighbors; radio that informs and entertains our friends and neighbors. Community radio is not limited to the FM airwaves.

We are living in the midst of a renaissance in radio — where the Internet allows us to share ourselves unencumbered by the airwaves. And we are in the heart of Raleigh; a city with a hopeful, gritty, and entrepreneurial spirit. This fuels our drive to create meaningful, informative, and entertaining programming. We do what we do because we love creating and we love Raleigh.

We have strong local voices producing curating content to share everyday. The current schedule is at http://www.littleraleighradio.org/?q=node/34.

Tonight on In the Museum

On the eve of the Civil War, the Bennehan and Cameron family plantation holdings called Stagville were the largest in North Carolina. They were home to Paul Cameron, the wealthiest man in North Carolina, and to the approximately 900 enslaved people he owned. Today, the historic site consists of 165 acres with numerous original buildings.

In 2011 photographer Brenda Scott began a photographic study of Stagville, resulting in thousands of images, 64 of which can be seen in Stagville: Black & White.

On Monday, April 28th, Brenda Scott and the vocalist for the Stagville exhibit recordings, Yolanda Hall, join In the Museum hosts Old Baby Shoes and Danica, to talk about Stagville: Black & White, on exhibit at the NC History Museum through January 25th, 2015.

Join us! 4pm on Little Raleigh Radio

Little Raleigh Radio on the go

Little Raleigh Radio is waiting to hear back from the FCC about when the construction permit for an LPFM transmitter on frequency 106.5 will be granted. When the public comment window opens we will let you know how to help us keeping building this community radio station.

If you are having a hard time listening on a mobile phone or tablet here is a guide our volunteers put together for using Tunedin™:

Little Raleigh Radio invites you to celebrate with us on July 25th!

For two years now, board members and volunteers at Little Raleigh Radio have been working hard and getting closer and closer to broadcasting. On July 25th at Mission Valley Cinema, we are celebrating with a screening of Corporate FM (see the trailer below). Come out and meet the Little Raleigh Radio team and have some birthday cake!

Event starts at 7pm. Screening begins at 8:00. Suggested donation: $10 (minimum ticket price is $6.50)

Join our event on Facebook

The money we are trying to raise will cover music licensing for the year. Our studio will be built and functional on the 25th, then we will begin our initial webstream very soon after and our application for our LPFM license will be submitted in October. We are so excited about our progress!

Come help us celebrate!
